We discovered Ahab was missing a leg (actually the lower part of her left leg) a day after she
came out of the nest for the first time.  She fell to the bottom of the cage and stayed there.  My
husband, Steve, picked her up to check her out, and needless to say, the problem was pretty
  obvious!

We started racking our brains!  How do you care for a one-legged bird?  Did we need to build
little ramps to the food bowls? Should we bury one in the nesting material? We were still
working on this two days later when we came home from work to find her sitting on a perch.
We didn't worry much after that!

Ahab has a slouch when she perches.  In the past, her favorite place to sit was on a slinky...
the curve matched her own.  We also placed a little stopper on the end of a branch so she
  wouldn't slide off of it.

She likes to scoot around on a ledge about an inch off the bottom of the cage floor. She'll
place her left side on the ledge and push herself around the cage with her right leg (left).
It's one of the cutest things she does!

All in all, she has more personality than any bird we've ever had!

Like Ahab, I'm disabled; or as I read in a publication, "I'm not disabled, I'm differently-abled."...

I've had complete reconstruction o
n both feet for 'severe skew foot' that I developed after growing 3"
in 3 months when I was 12 years old.  My feet are FINALLY structurally correct.  I was released from
my podiatrist's care in the Fall of '07 (yay!) and I've been working to strengthen everything on my
own.

I only use my crutches on long treks
now, an AFO protects my left foot, and I am thankful to be as
active as I am!  After all, I have a beautiful little girl and active husband to keep up with! :)   I cannot
thank my family and friends enough for their continued support and prayers!

By the way, if you're in need of a podiatrist, Dr. Bearden and his staff at Lexington Foot Clinic are
angels!  I highly recommend them!
Let me not beg for the stilling of
my pain,
but for the heart to conquer it.
